Wine has been around for a thousand of years accompanying countless celebrations and good food. Almost everyone knows wine comes from grapes. But is never too late to know something more about this well esteemed beverage.
Premium red wines primarily come from a red-skinned grape known as Shiraz or Syrah. It is grown throughout the world and is considered choice grapes. The different varieties of grapes make it possible to produce different types of wine that everyone can enjoy.
Unknown to many, fresh fruits of the garden variety can also be used to make wine other than grapes. These include apricots, berries, pears, etc. But grapes have been the fruit of choice by most wine makers. This is because grapes can be processed to wine without extra sugar or much additives during fermentation.
Alcohol is the by product of the breakdown of sugar. The yeast added to the grape extract acts on the sugar thereby producing ethanol. Since grapes have higher sugar content that some fruits, manufacturers just add yeast to process it.
Premium quality Shiraz grapes are checked for ripeness. This is to ensure that the right sugar content is achieved. Immature grapes are avoided as this will not yield the right color or taste that the manufacturers want to accomplish. After this, wine processing is started.
The pigment on the skin of the ripe Shiraz grapes gives its wine the rich red color. The grapes are pressed with the skin and seeds intact. Extracting the juice from the gathered grapes is the next step in wine making.
In white wines, little to no contact to the skin of grapes is ensured so that no red pigment will combine to the wine. After the grapes are pressed, they are placed in brewing tanks combined with yeast and processing takes place. After this, the product is allowed to age. Some manufacturers use oak barrels during this process to add more flavor their wines.
The last step before this premium wine is sold to the market is done. After some time in the oak vessels, the wine is transferred to individual wine bottles and allowed to mature some more. Then labeling and final packaging is done then these wine bottles are off to be tasted by the world.
